Located in Maisdon-sur-Sèvre just around the corner from Domaine de la Pépière, the affable Joël Bouvet is a new name to watch out for when it comes to delicious, honest renditions of Muscadet. Joël took over the 8ha estate of Domaine des Rebourgères in 2005 and immediately made the conversion to organic farming (now certified). Prior to this, Joël studied winemaking both in the States (in the Finger Lakes with Dr. Konstantin Frank) and in France in Alsace and with the legendary biodynamic Muscadet producer, Guy Bossard of Domaine de l'Ecu. Joël is farming some of the oldest vines in the region, many over 80 years old. Everything is hand harvested, fermentation is with native yeast, and all aging is carried out in old, traditional interred cement vats. Just like Joël, these are wines that might appear quiet or reserved at first, but with time, their complexity comes out, revealing a joyous and ebullient side.
