Although it slightly muddles the tawny “average year” classification, Colheita (pronounced Col-yate-a)—meaning “harvest” in Portuguese—is one of the older styles of tawny port, and is made from a single year’s yield. Thus, Colheitas are vintage tawnies that are not blended and only use wines made from grapes picked during one above-average year. The Smith Woodhouse “Single Year” 2000 Colheita comes from a year that was universally declared for classic vintage ports, and thus, represents a significant value. Aged in oak casks for 13 years before being bottled, it yields flavors rich enough to accompany the heartiest of cheeses and the most decadent chocolate desserts.
